Ongoing Mifos Deployments

Below is a summary of the Mifos deployments underway or in production globally, including both those driven closely by Grameen Foundation as part of our Lighthouse Deployment Program as well as those independently guided by our community.

Lighthouse Deployments

Our lighthouse program was initiated with a select number of MFIs around the globe to gather learnings on the Mifos platform, our deployment process and the impact of Mifos across a broad range of MFIs of different sizes, locales, and approaches to microfinance.

Grameen Koota - Bangalore, India

Grameen Koota played a pioneering role in the Mifos Initiative as the first Mifos implementation.  Grameen Koota has been running Mifos fully in production since October 2007.  Since deploying Mifos, Grameen Koota has continued their rapid growth and expansion - officially becoming a Non-Banking Financial Corporation (NBFC) as of March 2008 and opening up thirty-one new branches to reach seventy-five in total.  Mifos’ centralized database and the ease of rolling out new products and new branches instantly will help to drive their growth plans of reaching 500,000 clients by 2010.

Jitegemea Credit Scheme - Nairobi, KenyaJitegemea

Jitegemea Credit Scheme is an MFI working in the semi-urban districts of Nairobi. As they look to expand their services to the rural districts, they needed a system that gave them the security and flexibility to support their growth. Transitioning from a manual Excel-based system, Jitegemea began deployment preparations in January 2007 and are now running Mifos in production.

ENDA - Tunis, Tunisia

ENDA is an MFI based in Tunis, Tunisia. Founded in 1990 and providing microfinance services since 1995, ENDA is Tunisia’s pioneer and leading MFI, serving women and the urban poor. Currently serving over 75,000 clients, ENDA’s goal is to serve 100,000 families by 2009 and 240,000 clients by 2011. ENDA is moving to Mifos to support their growth and address their need for faster and more accurate information.

SECDEP (St. Elizabeth Community Development Program) - Iloilo, Philippines

SECDEP is an NGO following the Grameen Methodology providing financial services to poor women across the Western Visayas region of the Philippines.  Originating as a food program in the early 1970s, it has evolved to provide both enterprise development and health-related education for poor women in the rural communities.  Located in the province of Iloilo on the island of Panay, SECDEP is currently serving over 7,000 members across 5 branches with the primary objective being to help members become self-reliant economically, socially, and spiritually.  SECDEP will be leveraging Mifos to automate their operations and smoothly transition from a manual Excel-based MIS.

Community-Initiated Deployments

These deployments have been initiated and conducted independently by members of our global community.  Mifos product  A strong testament to the organic growth within our ecosystem, entrepreneurial IT Specialists have downloaded the Mifos source code and are guiding these deployments through indirect community support and advice through our mailing lists.

Swabalamban Bikas Bank (SB Bank) - Janakpur, Nepal

Status: In deployment, branch rollouts to begin once connectivity in place.

Swabalamban Bikas Bank (SB Bank) aims to serve the rural poor both horizontally and vertically, theirby raising their socio-economic conditions.  SB Bank was established at the initiative of the Centre for Self-help Development (CSD), an NGO that had been carrying out microfinance operations in nine districts of Nepal since 1993. SB Bank received its banking license in January 2002 and was promoted with goal of continuing their microfinance operations in a sustainable manner under a more recognized legal entity.  Currently they are serving more than 57,000 clients across 40 branches.  Magnus Consulting, a Nepal-based IT firm, has been independently leading their deployment with support through the mailing list; working closely with the Mifos community to overcome gaps, they’ve contributed a new interest rate calculation methodology that was included in Mifos 1.1.


Centre for Self-help Development (CSD) Nepal - Kathmandu, Nepal

Centre for Self-help Development (CSD) has been implementing microfinance in the hill districts of Nepal. Almost all the MFIs in Nepal are delivering their services in the tarai (Plain area) districts of Nepal where population density is high and transportation and marketing facilities are better in comparison to the hills. CSD has undertaken the challenging task of delivering microfinance to the poor in the hills where population is sparse and access to institution credit is almost non-existent.  Currently serving more than 20,000 clients on a manual based system, CSD employed Magnus Consulting to seek out a solution for them.  Magnus discovered Mifos on the internet and educated CSD Nepal on the benefits of an open source solution and has since been guiding their deployment with active support and contribution to the community since September 2007.

 


Kenya Entrepreneurship Empowerment Foundation (KEEF) - Nyeri, KenyaKEEF

Kenya Entrepreneurship Empowerment Foundation (K.E.E.F) is a dynamic organization, committed to developing innovative initiatives that support and empower the lives of the youth in Kenya aged 18 to 35.  Founded in 2004, KEEF provides professional and technical assistance while proactively seeking co-funding to support initiatives by young people and assist recipients to build their organizational capacity to ensure long term sustainability. Adept Systems is currently leading this deployment with training on Mifos 1.1 underway. 


Senegal Ecovillage Microfinance Fund (SEM Fund) - SenegalSEM Fund

Senegal Ecovillage Microfinance Fund, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to alleviating poverty by providing affordable business loans aimed at strengthening the business skills and livelihoods of highly motivated micro-entrepreneurs that lack access to the commercial banking system. SEM is a partnership between a team of US-based volunteers and the Global Ecovillage Network, Senegal (GENSEN), an association of thirty-eight Senegalese villages that collaborate to promote environmentally friendly development and integrate modern information technology with traditional Senegalese values. 

SEM's board of directors and volunteer network provide technical expertise, fundraising, ensure complete transparency, and develop relationships with international partners such as Kiva.org and the US Peace Corps. SEM's in-country management team and other GENSEN members design credit policies and ensure effective day-to-day administration of the lending program.  Deployment is being lead by one of their volunteers, Jeff Blue, who has been thoroughly engaged on the mailing list seeking out support.



Global Business Assist - GhanaGlobal Business Assist

In a partnership between Global Business Assist, an NGO based out of Crystal Lake, IL, and Africa Assistance Plan, an NGO based out of Ghana, they are offering training and loans to the young entrepreneurs of Ghana.  Seeking to help grow beyond the 100 clients currently being served through a paper-based system, Stephen Kaufmann, vice president of GBA, has been leading their deployment with the support of the Mifos community through our mailing lists.

 


Allover Microfinance Bank Ltd - Lagos, Nigeria

Allover Microfinance Bank Ltd, based out of Lagos, is an extension of the Allover Group which provides solutions and services in financial services, consultancy, real estates, education and tax.  They are dedicated to providing financial services to micro, small and medium enterprise (MSMEs) and emerging businesses looking for opportunities to increase their potential for success.  They look to Mifos for the flexibility to extend through other channels like mobile banking, POS, and internet banking.  Intelligent Network Services Ltd of Nigeria, a Specialist that attended our inaugural workshops in Kenya in October, is leading their deployment.
